Emotional literacy is promoted throughout the school in several different, age appropriate ways.
In EYFS and KS1 PATHS is used.
In Lower KS2 PATHS and Shine Time is used and in Upper KS2 Mind To Be Kind and Shine Time is used.
PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies), follows a series of whole class lessons which build on developing the child’s emotional literacy and awareness. The younger children are taught using puppets and stories about different feelings and are given strategies to deal with these feelings. All the children are taught that everybody has feelings and that some feelings are comfortable ones and some are uncomfortable and that it is the way that we deal with these feelings that is important.
Shine Time is an approach which is used for children who are experiencing low self esteem or difficulties expressing how they feel and gives four different coping strategies. Shine time is used or small groups of children or on an individual basis.
The aim of this project is to develop a culture where kindness, without an expectation of reward, becomes a way of life. Rather than focusing on performing acts of kindness for a reward, we are aiming to shift the focus to how it feels. By doing so, it is hoped that giving and receiving kindness becomes the norm and the school will be a happier, calmer and a more productive place for everyone.
Throughout the project, kindness is explored through three main themes:
- Acts of Kindness
- Living Without Harming Others
