Year 5 and 6 Curriculum Newsletter Summer 1

Mr Stratton

I have been teaching since 2002 across a variety of schools in Norfolk and am excited to join the Greyfriars team. I am leading PSHE across the school as well as teaching my Year 5 class. In Wells class we make the most of every learning opportunity and strive be the best we can in everything we do. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, walking, watching football (I’m a keen Norwich fan!) and spending time with my family.

Hello Wells Class 27-5-20

Posted on Wednesday, May 27th, 2020

Hello Wells Class,

I hope you are well and enjoying what would have been half term. Hopefully, you’ve been able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine with a walk, run or bike ride.

There is no Home Learning Grid this week as it is half term. However, Mr Sellars has very kindly read the Iron Man by Ted Hughes (which I read to you in class) and then created some questions to answer too. He has posted these on our class page so please have a listen and then try to answer the questions if you get the chance to do so.

Please remember to check out BBC Bitesize – there are some great resources covering all the subjects in the Curriculum and fun craft work activities, such as making paper mache monsters. Also, don’t forget to practice your Tackling Tables and that you can use Lexia to help with your reading and spelling if you’re one of the pupils in the class who has a login. Newsround is also great for being up to date with what is going on in the World and often has funny stories too.

Most importantly, make sure you stay safe and keep well.

Mr Stratton

The Iron Man Reading Challenge

Posted on Saturday, May 23rd, 2020

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all having a fantastic half-term, spending quality time at home with your families, keeping safe and well.

I thought that I would set you a bit of a challenge for over the May half-term. I have recorded an Audiobook of The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and set questions for you to have a go at answering to see how much of the story you have remembered and understood – we call this understanding ‘comprehension‘.

Please find the Youtube links to each of The Iron Man’s five chapters below. Listen to them carefully and then answer the questions beneath them for your year group. Once you have answered all of the questions from each chapter, check to see how many you got right and email your Teacher with your score.

Good Luck and see you soon,

Mr Sellers

Hello Wells Class,

I hope that you are well and looking forward to enjoying the sunshine this week.

The new Home Grid for Learning is on the website now for you to structure your learning at home. There are also activities and games on Education City, as well as learning your Times Tables at speed on Tackling Tables. Also, some of you have logins for Lexia to help with your reading and spelling skills so please use them too.

It was great to hear of the additional learning you had been doing with your parents when I phoned up last week. Learning to cook, do gardening, crafts such as sewing or knitting, artwork and learning to ride a bike are all important and useful life skills. Thank you to those of you who have sent me photos of what you’ve been doing.

Remember to look on BBC Bitesize as it has loads of great resources that you can access and use to help you with your Maths or English, plus many other subjects such as Science or DT. Also, if you would like a change from the Joe Wicks PE, there is the Athletics challenge and Just Dance on the Home Learning Grid.

Take care and stay safe,

Mr Stratton

Hello Wells Class,

It was really good to catch up with your parents and speak to some of you as well on Wednesday. I’m pleased to hear that you are all doing well – I know that some days are harder than others and that you also miss seeing your friends and family, but you are coping really well.

I enjoyed hearing what you have been doing whilst you have been off. The work we have been setting with the Home Learning Grids, Tackling Tables, Education City, Lexia and also reading. It was interesting to hear the new skills you’ve been learning and developing: cycling, cooking, artwork, crafts to name just a few! Remember, there are some great resources on BBC Bitesize for you to use which might help with your Maths, English and Science, as well as some really interesting art and craft activities. I have included some photos below of a paper mache monster Charlie made and is rightly very proud of. Have a look on the BBC Bitesize website and see if there is something you would be interested in trying.

It is really important that you keep exercising for your own mental well-being. Going out for a walk, bike ride, doing Joe Wicks PE, Just Dance or Cosmic Yoga on YouTube are great ways to keep active and feel energized. Also, keep watching Newsround to know what is happening in the World.

Take care, enjoy the sunshine and keep safe,

Mr Stratton

Hello Wells Class,

I hope that you are all well and keeping safe. I watched our Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, on TV last night and am looking forward to the further guidance coming out about the stages necessary for the lockdown to ease. It is well worth keeping up to date with the news by watching Newsround each day.

I was in school last week with the key worker’s children and we were working through the Home Learning Grid as well as doing some work about VE Day, including bunting. I hope you tried some of the VE Day activities that Ms Black and I put on the website – it would be great to see some pictures of your work.

Remember, there is a new Home Learning Grid for this week as well as work on Education City and Tackling Tables. You can also play the educational games on these sites and challenge your friends in school to them too. If you have a login for Lexia, then please use this as it is great to help your spelling and reading.

Keep smiling and keep safe,

Mr Stratton
