I joined Greyfriars Academy in September 2015 as a Year 5 class teacher. I love teaching the KS2 children and I also enjoy overseeing History, Geography and EAL to ensure that these are delivered in line with the National Curriculum. I have worked in a variety of educational settings from Year 3 to Year 12, both nationally and internationally. However, I have to say, I’ve enjoyed teaching the spirited and talented children at Greyfriars most of all, and I love to see them make great progress through setting high expectations of themselves. I am a great supporter of the arts and like to run art or drama clubs whenever the opportunity presents itself! In my free time, I work…  However, I also have a love of travel, community theater and family time!

Two key messages for you this week:

Here we are again – Friday certainly comes quickly, doesn’t it? Picking up on my messages last week, I just want to reinforce some important facts in your mind about learning and wellbeing -establishing a routine is so important to your mental health and confidence. If you are worried about coming back to school in September, the solution is simple. Start work now – get better at the things you know you need to work on. Develop your confidence and your ‘can do’ attitude. Each day counts and every day is an opportunity to get better at something.

 

 

 

 

Ms Black’s News

Well I had a hilarious walk with the dog on Wednesday. Jasmine was determined to teach me how to skateboard but I have to tell you – I don’t find it easy! I know it sounds weird but I can’t bear the fact that it moves! Well, Jasmine was holding on to my hand the whole time that I was on it but suddenly the skateboard started to get away from me and it just kept getting further and further away, leaving my right leg behind, on the ground. I have no idea why I kept that other foot on the skateboard, I guess I just panicked and didn’t think fast enough. But that leg just kept going, I kept screaming, Jasmine kept shouting ‘let it go!’ without me listening, until eventually I’d almost done the splits and landed on the floor laughing like a mad-woman! I think if anyone had filmed it, they would be sending it to ‘You’ve Been Framed’ and earning themselves £100.

Well done to those of you who have completed the work on Education City. This is how it’s looking so far: Only 5 children have done the reading and 4 children have done the maths. I have also only received work from the HLG tasks this week so I am very concerned that most of you are not helping yourselves to prepare for the Autumn Term. You have until Sunday to complete the Education City tasks so make sure you do please. Also, do let me know if you have any computing issues that prevent you from doing this. You can call the school if you need to or you can send an email.

I can not emphasize enough the importance of continuing your hard work. You all made so much progress this year so don’t let that go to waste by allowing your brains to go off on holiday too soon! Get back to it.

Hot Task Feedback

I have received some more wonderful hot task poetry – Kimberley send hers on Friday but I’d already done the blog. It is such a brilliant poem – I really enjoyed the images she created and I could see she worked really hard to apply the personification skills.  Amanda also did a great job of that – her poem was wonderfully atmospheric.  Take a look for yourselves:

Blakeney Class Year Book 2020

I have three photos sent in so far Blakeney – still waiting for the rest of you to send your baby pictures in so we can get this funny Year Book thing going! It’s really simple – just find a photo and send it to me at my email address. If you don’t have a photo on your computer, then it’s still simple. Use your mobile phone – take a photo of the photo with your phone, then just send that to me. Couldn’t be easier!

Class Year Book Photos!

What happened Blakeney? I’ve received zero photos from you! What a huge disappointment that is. Have a look at Holkham’s for some inspiration. It doesn’t take much – just photograph an old photo using your mobile phone and email it to me at a.black@gf.greyfriars.com. Do it today or it will be too late!

Class Year Book 2020

Next week, you’re going to help create your own Class Yearbook 2020. Only  these will be class photos with a difference – your baby photos!

How can I participate? Find a photo of yourself when you were a baby and email it (Monday or Tuesday) to your class teacher who will put all the class photos onto a single document and upload it to the website on Wednesday.

What happens after that? You will go to your class blog page on Wednesday, download the photo doc and the answer sheet and guess who the babies are. Write/type your answers onto the answer sheet and email it back to your teacher by Thursday afternoon.

How will we get the answers? Next Friday, your teacher will give the correct answers on the class blog page and will also announce who got most guesses correct!

Make sure you get your photo to your teacher by Tuesday!

Your Play on Stage – BBC Playwriting Competition

An exciting opportunity for budding young playwrites has just been announced on the One Show. Read on if this sounds like something you would love to be involved in:

What is As You Write It – Your Play on Stage?

At a time when we are all missing out on the magic of going to the theatre, The One Show, along with The Shakespeare North Playhouse is launching an exciting new playwriting competition, giving children and young people across the UK the opportunity to see their ideas come to life on stage. We hope this will help inspire the next generation of playwrights as well as encouraging a love of theatre and the arts in children and young people.

The competition is open to all children and young people aged between 7 and 16 years old. It opens for entries at 7pm on Thursday 25th June 2020. The deadline for entering the competition is just before midnight on Monday 31st August 2020.

All you need to enter is an idea for a play, a short description of up to four of the main characters and the first few opening lines. You’ll also need to tell us what having the opportunity to write your play and have it performed on stage would mean to you.

What is the prize?

From the ideas submitted, three finalists from each of the three categories will be chosen and announced on The One Show during autumn 2020. They will then have the opportunity to develop their ideas with professionals and write their final play.

A winner will be selected from each category based on their final play. Winners will be announced on The One Show in early 2021 and an excerpt from their play will be shown on the programme. The final three winners will receive a special award and have their play performed at The Shakespeare North Playhouse when it opens in 2022.

The development of The Shakespeare North Playhouse is being overseen by The Shakespeare North Trust. It is currently being constructed in Prescot on Merseyside. Once built, it will complete the UK’s Shakespearean triangle – London – Stratford-upon-Avon – Prescot. Alongside a flexible 350 seat theatre, the Playhouse will also provide educational facilities, a visitor centre and additional performance spaces including an outdoor performance garden.

Entry categories are divided by age group as follows:

  • ACT ONE – 7 – 10 year olds
  • ACT TWO – 11 – 13 year olds
  • ACT THREE – 14 – 16 year olds

The entry must be submitted into the correct age category according to your age on 31st August 2020, which is the competition closing date.

Remember to email me some work, photos or a letter to share with your classmates. If you have not been engaging with the learning and have not been in touch to let me know how you are getting on, you can expect a phone call this week. I am still waiting to receive hot tasks from 19 children and would like to see some of your science, art and topic work too please.

Science

This week you are continuing to work on Polar Bears (Week 5) . I would love to see some of this work coming in Blakeney! This week we will be concentrating on why your animal is endangered and what is being done to help this species? What might cause animals to become endangered?

Remember to make notes and then write in your own words as much as possible. Do not just copy and paste if using the internet.

Polar Bears Week 5

Topic

Sir Francis Drake was a goodie. Grace O’Malley was a baddie. Do you agree? Not all pirates were outlaws. Read the information on the HLG about the ‘hero’ Sir Francis Drake and ‘the pirate’ Grace O’Malley. All is not what you would think. Write a persuasive letter to Elizabeth 1st explaining your point of view.

Art

I saw some fantastic examples of optical illusions using lines and shading last week. This week, it gets even more exciting. Again, you will be working on Optical illusions using shading to show form. But this time, you will be creating a 3D hand picture like this:

You need paper, a pencil, a ruler or something with a straight edge and some coloured pencils or crayons.
Place your hand on the paper and draw around it. Draw straight lines of equal distance across your page, leaving the hand blank.
Use curved lines inside the hand. Add colours in a repeating pattern.

Physical and mental health

Don’t forget to work on this very important aspect of your learning. For physical health, make sure you check out Miss Penman’s stretch routines – Miss Penman is a superb dance instructor and she’s put together some great workouts for the Greyfriars children. Have a go – I have! Scroll down the page – you will find Miss Penman’s workouts that were posted a few days ago.

For your mental health, reading is a brilliant way to escape the four corners of your room. Settle down with a good book to read and relax  by going to the following webpage:

Again, it appears that the same children are doing all three subject on Education City. I’m very proud of you. Those of you that are not attempting EdCity work and are not sending in your work from the HLG to me are a great concern to me. We will be getting in touch shortly to discuss what you will need to do to catch up and feel ready for the Autumn term in September.

I repeat what I said last week: the only way you will feel prepared for Year 6 is if you try to keep on top of the home learning now. It is really important to your education and well-being that you commit to a daily work schedule. You know I am here if you need support or help. Blakeney’s Friday Blog 26th June

Hi Blakeney!

 

Motivational Speech

It’s Friday already. The weeks are just flying by and before you know it, the summer holidays will be here. This is the time when you can wind down, put your feet up, get out and about (in a socially distanced way) and do all the things that you can’t do while your days are kept busy with school work.

But we’re not there quite yet! It’s so important that we keep learning and keep to a routine that gives us a sense of purpose. Our minds need exercise if we want them to work well, just like our bodies do. Continuing to work on those skills that you are not confident about is the way that you will acquire that confidence. Use this opportunity to brush up on times tables, spelling, grammar and punctuation – whatever it is that you know you would benefit from. Continue to follow the Home Learning Grid and do the Education City tasks that have been set for you so that you know you are keeping up and will be in the same place as everyone else when you start back at school in September. A routine is also important to your mental health. There is nothing worse for your mental state than having no sense of purpose. You need to know that each day counts and treat every day as an opportunity to better yourself.

Well I’ve been working on the Topic curriculum for next year – looking for exciting new ways to approach history and geography at Greyfriars. I can’t wait to get back in the classroom to teach humanities again! I’ve also been looking at the work that’s been sent to me, finishing the annual reports that you will get in July and making phone calls to check that you are ok (more coming today so if you get a ‘no caller ID’ call, it will probably be me and it’s safe to answer). Each day, I try to stick to my routine and get things done in the time I set for each task – this keeps my day structured and purposeful. It also means that when I have some down time, I can really enjoy it guilt-free and without getting bored with that free time. If you’re not structuring your day yet, then I suggest you start doing it now and feel the difference to your mental health. You will probably also feel a lot better about coming back to school in September.

Last Saturday, I met up with my family bubble for the first time since lockdown. We chose a secluded beach, took the dogs and had a picnic and nice walk. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the Father’s Day presents so I did a secret drop at my parents home on Sunday afternoon. I sneaked up to the door, rang the bell and ran around the corner, leaving the gifts on the doorstep. My dad was very confused until I poked my head out!

Other News

Arminas has been a little quiet lately. Sadly, he’s been through a hard time as he lost his dog and that is such a difficult experience. Our pets are like members of our family and we can feel a great deal of emotion and loss when they pass. This poem is for Arminas and anyone else in our class who has lost a beloved pet:

A Bridge Called Love

It takes us back to brighter years,
to happier sunlit days,

It was Father’s Day yesterday – did anyone plan something special? Did you know that the idea of a special day to celebrate fathers was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honour fathers. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom.

This week, we are considering this question: Were pirates, heroes or villains?

Many stories about pirates are contradictory. This means that some people think they were swashbuckling heroes, and some think they were violent thieves. Find out more about this lesson by looking on the Home Learning Grid (HLG).

Education City

Education is set up for you again. I have been looking at who has been having a go and it’s looking like this so far:

Well done to those  who completed all the maths: Grace, Sophie, Amanda, Brodie and Amber. Kimberley and Enija also had a go, which is good to see.

Enija, Grace, Amber and Brodie did all the reading activities. Brilliant! Sophie, Amanda and Kimberley almost finished them all – great stuff!

The literacy work was completed by Enija, Sophie, Amber, Brodie , Kimberley, Grace and Amanda.

In fact, the same seven children can be seen engaging with Education City each week. Well done – I’m very proud of you.

However… 

I am concerned about those of you who do not seem to be engaging with the home learning as you will be back at school in September and the only way you will feel prepared is if you try to keep on top of the home learning. It is really important to your education and well-being that you commit to a daily work schedule. You know I am here if you need support or help. Just email me if you have a question or don’t understand something.

I am really looking forward to receiving your emails this week with examples of your work attached – especially those HOT Tasks and the Polar Bear fact files. I am celebrating your work every Friday on this blog so if you send it to me by Friday, I will be able to share with your classmates.
