Brancaster Learning – Week Beginning 1/2/21

Hello Brancaster!  Welcome to week 5 of this new term. I hope you rested this weekend after a busy week of learning!

My emails were full last week with lots of your lovely work – I was very pleased with you all! Let’s keep it up this week by working through the lessons and activities I have suggested below. Don’t hesitate to email and let me know if you need anything to support your learning. I look forward to seeing your completed work. As always, I can be contacted via the school office or on my email – a.sayer@gf.kwestacademy.com.

New activities on Education City can be found at https://go.educationcity.com/

Remember to log on to Tackling Tables and practise! Let me know how you get on – https://www.tacklingtables.co.uk/. I would like all of you to complete at least one Tackling Tables test this week, but like always, the more you do, the more likely you will receive the Tackling Tables star award!

Note: Tackling Tables test scores will not reach my account if you did not press the tick button at the end of the test – please remember to do this! You must all complete (get a score of 100) the blue level before you do any green or red level tests as they will not register to my account if you haven’t completed the blue first.

Please remember to complete a task a week from the new homework grid for this half-term. Here is a link for you to look at: Year 3 and 4 Homework Grid Spring 1 . Please email me your photos so we can celebrate together!

Today, we are starting our new unit on report writing.  I would like you to think about what a report/information text is. What sort of things does a report tell you?

An information report provides readers with information on chosen a topic by providing them with facts. Generally, an information report is written to provide facts about a living or non-living object. It can be an individual object or a group of objects.

A report gives important information about a subject. Watch this clip to help you understand more about report writing:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgqxwnb/articles/zffy92p

Today for your cold task, I would like you to write a report/information text about yourself. Include as many details as you can and share it with me.

Guided Reading

This week, we are going to look at a new story called ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. Over the next two days, read Chapter 1 of the story and answer the questions.

To continue to internalise the text and then to look at the use of adjectives within the writing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hifcUYaACzI

Adjectives are used to make information writing interesting for the reader. You can add adjectives to describe different nouns. In ‘The Truth about Trolls’, the writer has decided to describe the eyes, nose and teeth of the trolls using two adjectives.

These ajectives have been separated using a comma as this is a list. These are known as expanded noun phrases.

Here is a picture of a troll.  Can you use adjectives around the picture to describe the troll’s features? Once you have done this, put them into sentences using commas to make expanded noun phrases using the other sheet below. Now use these sentences to create a paragraph describing the troll.

Watch this short video on how different drinks can affect the enamel on teeth.

You could set the experiment up at home if you wish. Be warned when you open the jars after a week it’s a bit smelly.

Write up the experiment and use these headings.

In school, the eggs will be left for a week in sealed jars.

Topic

This week in topic we are looking at the Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated. First, let’s find out how they were named after the animals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVClAj8q_lY

Now let’s look at some of the traditions:

http://www.hellokids.com/c_31230/videos-for-kids/chinese-new-year/discovering-china-chinese-new-year-traditions-and-celebrations

Watch how families prepare for the new year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8ssHXZ9_qU

Now, prepare a leaflet that tells your teacher all about the Chinese New Year.

Art

This week in art, we are going to attempt to draw Toothless using a step-by-step approach. Watch this video all the way through, then watch it again stopping at different points so that you can see how to accomplish a good picture of Toothless. Sketch lightly until you are happy with the result then go over with darker lines.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68vnorMEaIY

Have two or three attempts and the choose your favourite and put him in a setting of your choice.

Computing

Last week, most of you looked at the ‘Erase All Kittens’ coding game. This helped you understand the importance of how we use code to create different things or complete tasks in a game. You also learned the importance of using different symbols (<p> and </p>) to complete your code so it works.

This week, I want you to continue playing ‘Erase All Kittens’ and complete the game. If you completed the game last week, have a look at a different way of coding but with Minecraft!

The link for the ‘Erase All Kittens’ website is: https://eraseallkittens.com/

R.E.

Last week, we looked at the Creation Story. If you missed it, or have forgotten it, you can watch it here: https://request.org.uk/restart/2020/03/26/bible-quest-creation/

There have been many artists inspired by creation, have a go at copying some of the paintings or design your own:

You could include some writing about what inspired you to draw a particular picture.

You could also have a go at gardening yourself – even if you haven’t got a garden you could always try growing things, like cress, in a pot.

P.E

Make sure you get some fresh air! Why not go for a long walk or go on a short walk daily and time yourself each day can you get quicker on the walk. You can always go back to last week’s blog and have a go at the activities on offer here. Or have a go at these activities:

Just Dance – Search this on YouTube – you will find lots of videos your child could dance to
