Dictionary Detective – use a dictionary to look up the definition of your words and record them.

English – Use the structure of Kassim and the dragon: Kassim and the Greedy Dragon Model Text (1) to begin to create your own warning story.

Write a silly sentence for each of your words.

English – Using your boxing up from yesterday, you are going to start writing the beginning of your story. Think carefully about the speech punctuation for your warning.

Have a look at the start of the Kassim story and the start of my story to help. Look how I have kept the structure of the story, but changed some of the words. Now it is your turn to write the beginning:

Once upon a time, there was a poor boy called Kassim who lived on the edge

of a dark forest. Early one frosty morning, he woke up and began the walk to

school but his Mummy warned him, “Beware of the greedy dragon!” So, he

walked and he walked and he walked, jiggety-jog, jiggety-jog, jiggety-jog, till he came to a damp, dark cave.

 

Once there was an adventurous girl called Amy. She loved to explore and discover new places. One bright sunny day, she packed her bag and got ready to set off. However, her Dad warned her, “Beware of the mountain path that leads to the waterfall.” Amy left her home and she skipped and she skipped and she skipped, skippity-skip, skippity-skip, skippity-skip, until she heard the water gushing from the waterfall.

 Guided reading – Today we will answer some questions from chapter 3. I hope you read it well!

Alphabetical order – write your spellings in alphabetical order from A-Z, then from Z-A.

English – Continue using your boxing up to write your own version of the next paragraph. To help you, I have put the next section of the Kassim story along with my version. What similes and metaphors can you think of to use?

The first time Kassim looked into the cave, he saw dark shadows shivering! The second time Kassim looked into the cave, he heard heavy footsteps shuffling! The third time Kassim looked into the cave, he saw a pile of glittering jewels! A moment later, Kassim crept into the darkness and took not one, not two but three huge, diamonds that glowed like fire light!

Amy was beginning to feel as hot as a dragon’s fiery breath. She decided to dip her feet in the cool water. The first step she took, she could feel the crystal blue water rippling like a gentle breeze. The second step she took, she could feel a sudden sharp pain. As she looked down, she could see not one, not two, but three magnificent shells, glistening like twinkling stars. She picked them up and peered inside. There were beautiful pearls, perfectly formed like a full moon.

Word Art – Practise doodling your spellings using different kinds of writing, for example, bubble writing, joined up and print.

Now ask an adult to test you on this week’s spellings and practice any you got wrong.

English – We are continuing with the last part of our story. Continue using your boxing up to write your own version of the last paragraphs. To help you, I have put the next section of the Kassim story along with my version.

Unfortunately, something else was alive inside the cave! Something very large. Something very hungry. It was the Greedy Dragon. It had teeth like daggers and claws like knives!

It shivered in the shadows, shuffled its wings and snorted its fiery breath. Kassim screamed and he ran and he ran and he ran, jiggety-jog, jiggety-jog, jiggety-jog, with the dragon shivering and shuffling along behind him, snorting its fiery breath. Sooner rather than later, Kassim arrived home, just in the nick of time, with his coat tails singed behind him but in his hand he held, not one, not two but three glittering stones like giant seeds of greed!

 

Unfortunately, a magpie, perched on a tree close by, also spotted the shiny objects in Amy’s hand. It began to spread its feathery wings and open its tunnel beak.

All of a sudden, it swooped down. Amy jumped in fear and began to run as fast as a cheetah, skippity-skip, skippity-skip, skippity-skip. The magpie flew close behind, squawking loudly in her ears. In no time at all, Amy reached her home, closed her door and crouched on the stone floor. She undid her tightly clasped hands, showing not on, not two, but three precious pearls.

Read your whole story. What is good about it? How do you think the story could be improved? Don’t forget to email your story to your teacher. Next week, we will be doing out Hot Task, so you can show how you can make your writing even better.

Science – We are continuing to look at teeth. Watch this short u-tube clip and the have a go at drawing a cross section of tooth. Can you label the different parts of the tooth, then write a short explanation about each part of the tooth.

Make some salt dough or use model magic or plasticine and make a model of your different teeth in a jaw use this picture to help. Make sure you show the incisors, canines, pre-molars, molars and wisdom teeth. Look in a mirror to see the size and shape of your teeth.

Art – This week I would like you to think about how you could model a dragon’s eye. If you have a marble at home you could use this as the eye and build up the scales around using plasticine, clay or salt dough.

Once your dragon eye is dry you can paint it using one colour with different tones.

Computing – Last week, you learnt about the importance of getting the algorithm (instructions) correct so that the output of the device (your parents) was correct. This week, you are going to do this with a computer programme called ‘Light Bots’. Watch this video so you understand the basics of Light Bots:

Storywriter’s Club

Story Writer’s Club is a friendly, fun Zoom group for 7-11 year-olds who enjoy bringing their stories to life on the page.

Sessions will recommence on Thursdays at 4.15pm; they will start on 21st January and run for 4 weeks until February half term, with the last one being Feb 11th.
