Reading like VIPERS!


Recently in Holkham Class we have started using the acronym VIPERS to help us with our reading comprehension. VIPERS stands for Vocabulary; Infer; Predict; Explain: Retrieve and Summarise. Each week we will look in depth at a new text. This week we chose ‘Walk the Plank’. On Monday, we created a ‘Never Heard the Word’ list for our focus on Vocabulary. On Wednesday we drew¬† pictures of the characters and inferred their thoughts, feeling, traits and appearance, as well as, predicted what might have happened before and after the story took place. Thursday we attempted to explain why the author had written his sentences longer in some paragraphs and shorter in others and played a game of fastest finger first to quickly retrieve key facts from the text. Today, we have summarised the key points from each paragraph and discussed our likes and dislikes of the story.
