## Place value and times tables.

Last week was much more like our usual routine will be, and we got a lot done.  We started our work on place value, and really establishing what that means. Without knowing that, the children can’t understand the rest of mathematics properly.

We use a lot of concrete materials in our maths.  This doesn’t mean they are really made of concrete, it means that they are solid objects that can be manipulated to help the children understand what they are doing.

Beadstrings are useful because the beads are in coloured groups of 10.  This means that the children can count 56 by counting the tens first, and then the ones.

Cubes are really useful for smaller numbers, or, like here, for multiplication, sorting and grouping.  The children use whiteboards a lot as it removes the fear of having made a mistake in their books.  (Sometimes we even write on the table!)

In this activity, we had 20 cubes, and had to see which groups they would evenly go into without having anything left over.  Then we counted how many groups we had, and how many were in that group to find our multiplication question.  This shows begins to the children how multiplication and division are related.
